Controversial DJ Danny Baker is making another return to BBC Radio 5 Live next month as part of the station’s coverage of the Euro 2008 football championship.
Baker, who claims to have been sacked three times by the BBC, is returning to host six editions of the Radio 5 Live’s 606 post-match phone-in show starting with the Austria v Croatia game on June 8.
Listeners will also be able to watch the phone-in debate via the red button on interactive digital TV.
“I don’t think anyone has been fired three times from the BBC - not even Kenny Everett - so returning to 606 represents an enormous opportunity for me,” said Baker whose last 606 show will follow the Euro 2008 final in Vienna on June 29.
“Of course the problem is that latest figures suggest only 1,400 people in the UK have even a passing interest in this tournament but I really believe that, come the latter stages, Radio 5 Live can double that tally,” he added.
“Leastways, I’ve never been to Iceland before and am very much relishing getting to grips with the altitude and native songs as the competition unfolds.”
He joins fellow commentators including Steve McClaren, Graham Taylor, Chris Waddle and Stan Collymore across Radio 5 Live and digital sister station Radio 5 Live Sports Extra’s coverage of Euro 2008.
Baker first worked for the old BBC Radio 5 between 1990 and 1993, working on Sportscall, 606 and then Morning Edition.
After a stint at Radio 1, he returned to the relaunched Radio 5 live in 1996, but was sacked a year later over comments he made about football referees.
